What are the differences between a NOS, COS, & Network Protocols?

NOS as stated in my competency 5 is the Network Operating System. It runs on a designated server computer. It is the program that manages the resources and services of a network. It also provides network security including permissions.

The following picture is me with a Novell Server. The NOS for this work of art is Net Ware

Once Again here are some comparsons of different NOS's and there features:

* W4W = Microsoft Windows for Workgroups
* ATalk = AppleTalk
* LAN Srv/Sp = IBMs PC LAN Server or LAN Support

Thanks Again to Rawn Shah for this great diagram...

COS (Computer Operating System) is the medium that allows the hardware to communicate to the software on a designated computer. Examples are MAC System 8, MAC 7.6, OS/2, WIN 95, WIN 3.1, & DOS. Lets put it this way if you didn't have a COS, you wouldn't be reading this on a computer!

Network Protocols on the other hand are the languages that allow computers to communicate with each other. The protocols and data are transmitted through Packets. On an Ethernet examples of network protocols would be On the Internet the network protocol is TCP/IP.
